Crowfield Announces Farewell Concert

Charleston-based pop/roots-rock band Crowfield announced today that it will disband in March. Led by singer/songwriter Tyler Mechem, the band released its latest studio album The Diamond Sessions in March and toured heavily around the Southeast and U.S. through the summer and fall.

Mechem formed Crowfield in 2007 with longtime musical partner Joe Giant (on keys) shortly after the two relocated to Charleston from a small town in Indiana. They initially performed around town as a duo before adding extra players to the lineup, including Micah Nichols on lead guitar, Ethan Ricks on bass, and Parker Gins on drums. The current lineup features Mechem, Gins, Whitt Algar (keys), Ben Meyer (bass), and Ryan Holderfield (lead guitar).

Crowfield’s 2008 debut album Goodbye, Goodnight, So Long Midwestern was a twangy collection of guitar-based power-pop and alt-country. A 12-song, self-titled follow-up aimed for a grandiose “modern rock” style. Named in honor of late promoter/manager Johnny Diamond, 2012′s The Diamond Sessions included more countrified ballads and well-polished guitar-pop tunes.

In a note to fans posted on the band’s Facebook page on Jan. 4, Mechem stated that he and his bandmates were “moving on to other interests in life” and performing an official farewell show as a full band at the Charleston Music Hall on Sat. March 15.

“Yes, we are calling it quits,” Mechem said. “We’ve given everything we have even when there was nothing left to give. We have seen enough to know we have seen enough. And, it’s a beautiful sight.

“Charleston, each of us thanks you for making a home for us and our music,” he added. “Charleston and beyond, we stood on your shoulders and saw our dreams come true before our eyes. We are eternally grateful beyond words.”

Mechem also stated that he sees the farewell show as a “celebration, not a funeral.”

Crowfield will also perform at the Handlebar in Greenville on Fri. Jan. 25 and at the Vistulite Theatre in Charlotte, N.C., on Sat. Jan. 26. Tickets for the Charleston Music Hall show go on sale for $17 on Tues. Jan. 8. Visit crowfieldmusic.com and charlestonmusichall.com for more.
